This day was years in the making. Robert and Kathy have been together for seven years and engaged for four. Throughout that time, they selflessly postponed their wedding so their children could have their own moments including weddings, growing families, and all the spotlight that comes with it. Between the two of them, they now have five grandchildren ranging from two to in their twenties. After always putting family first, it was finally their turn.
Planning an Intimate Wedding
Robert took the lead in planning the big day. As an older couple getting married, they envisioned something simple and romantic, just the two of them. They considered a familiar spot or local beach, but after discovering photos of the Santa Barbara Courthouse online, they were immediately drawn to its charm.
Located about five hours from their home in Northern California, it also offered the chance to turn their wedding into a vacation. They were able to relax, explore Santa Barbara and Montecito, and celebrate their marriage in a beautiful setting.
A Courthouse Ceremony Full of Heart
They initially planned a walk-in appointment but later secured a scheduled time for their ceremony, which worked out perfectly for planning and photography. Knowing the exact timing made everything go smoothly, and as their photographer and witness, it was an honor to play such an important role in their day.
Their ceremony took place in the courthouse gardens, surrounded by lush greenery and Spanish-style architecture. Once they were officially announced as husband and wife, we spent time capturing portraits around the grounds. It was the perfect intimate wedding for any couple but especially older couples. It was peaceful, joyful, and full of meaning.
From Courthouse to Coastline
Since their original plan included a beach wedding, we decided to head to my favorite local beach after the ceremony, Butterfly Beach. I’m so glad we did. Walking hand-in-hand down the shore, they were completely in their element. With dramatic cliffs and soft waves behind them, I was able to capture candid, joyful images that reflected the ease and love between them.
Butterfly Beach in the Santa Barbara and Montecito area is one of my absolute favorite spots for elopement, couples, or wedding photos. It’s quiet, romantic, and incredibly scenic, especially for couples looking to turn their wedding into a memorable vacation experience.
